The inaugural session of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) between Ghana and Sierra Leone was held on 23 April 2026 in Accra, Ghana, with expert discussions focused on addressing some important issues between the countries.
The session, co-chaired by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa and Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Madam Francess Piagie Alghali, held various discussions on sectors, ranging from defence and security, economic and social affairs, agriculture, and trade, and engaged with their counterparts from Sierra Leone to discuss mutual areas of cooperation.
Addressing the session, Hon. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa acknowledged the longstanding historical ties between the two countries and noted that the PJCC platform is a strategic one, where areas of cooperation could be translated into actionable programmes and policies for the benefit of citizens of both countries.
Hon. Ablakwa urged both countries to follow up with the implementation of the MOUs signed, mainly to address critical national interest avenues.
On her part, Hon. Francess Piagie Alghali expressed appreciation for the warm reception offered by the people of Ghana to the delegation from Sierra Leone, and reaffirmed her country’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Ghana.
The NACOC team formed part of the Ghana delegation, under the Political, Diplomatic and Security Committee. Leading discussions on narcotics, NACOC assured the Sierra Leone Drug Law Enforcement Agency of cooperation in the area of sharing intelligence on drug trafficking trends, routes and organised crime groups.
NACOC further offered to help build and develop a robust Canine Unit for the Sierra Leonean drug law enforcement officers, since Ghana has well-trained dog handlers.
At the end of the session, one agreement and six (6) MOUs were signed.
