The German Federal Criminal Police Office, popularly known as the Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), donated operational kits to the Narcotics Control Commission’s Canine (K9) Unit in Accra.
The collaboration between the two organisations has been in existence since 2007, when the German government supported the Commission’s canine (K9) unit with similar gesture.
The presentation fulfilled a vow made after a sponsored training event for canine unit officers a few weeks earlier.
The donation included branded NACOC polo shirts, desert boots, gloves, caps, winter jackets, and other supplies.
Presenting the items, Dominik Muller, the BKA’s Regional Police Liaison Officer, stated that the support was intended to supplement the operations of the Commission’s canine unit and that the donation would help to ensure visibility during field operations.
He went on to say that the German government, through the BKA, has been working with the Commission since 2007, primarily to give training support, dog donations to build the canine unit, and logistical support, and that he hopes to continue the partnership.
Mr Alexander Twum-Barimah, Deputy Director-General in charge of NACOC Enforcement, Control, and Elimination, thanked the German government and the BKA for their assistance.
He stated that the assistance will go a long way towards improving and facilitating the operations of the unit, thereby ensuring that illicit drug smuggling is reduced, particularly at airports, ports, and border crossings.
