The Spanish Ambassador to Ghana H.E. Angel Lossada Torres-Quevedo has said the issue of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking is not a national problem for Ghana, but an international challenge that needs more cooperation with different states.
He said a good cooperation should be structured at all levels, which should include the Police, Law enforcement agencies, the Judiciary, and civil society organisations. He maintained that such partnership with the international community would be able to achieve a common goal of a drug free society.
The ambassador, made the remarks when he paid a courtesy call on Brig Gen Maxwell Obuba Mantey, the Director-General, NACOC, on Monday 15 December 2025 at his office, in Accra.
H.E. Torres-Quevedo, noted that the strategic position of Ghana in Africa with two harbours makes it easier for drug-cartels to use the country as a transit point for illicit drug trafficking. He gave the assurance that the Spanish government is willing to partner Ghana through the NACOC to identify the trends, see the opportunities, and support NACOC to fight the menace.
In welcoming the ambassador, the Director-General, explained that the mandate of NACOC is to fight the illicit drug abuse and trafficking with the support of our international partners. He noted that no one single country or agency alone can fight the drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking. He therefore called for international collaboration to bring the canker to the barest minimum.
He said there is the political will on the part of government, the executive, the judiciary and Parliament to support NACOC to execute its mandate under the law.
The D-G commended the ambassador and said the visit is an indication of the work NACOC is doing and how the Spanish government is willing to collaborate with NACOC. He stressed the need to share timely intelligence and also build the capacity of officers.
On his part, the Deputy Director-General, in charge of Enforcement, Control and Elimination, Lawyer Alexander Twum-Barimah, said any form of support to make the world a safer place for all is welcome.
