The Municipal Chief Executive of Ayawaso West, Dr Michael Mensah, has reiterated his commitment to ensure that the drug abuse menace is tackled with the needed attention and support it deserves in his municipality.
According to him, the abuse of synthetic precursor chemical drugs and other narcotic drugs such as marijuana, hashish and heroin is endangering the lives of most active youth in society, hence the need for swift measures to curb the situation.
Dr Mensah gave these assurances when he visited the Director-General and Management of the Narcotics Control Commission on Monday, 1 December 2025, mainly to engage stakeholders on the developmental agenda campaign being spearheaded in the municipality.
He expressed concern about the devastation being caused by the abuse of drugs by our youth in society and appealed to the Management of NACOC to support the Assembly to win out all forms of acts that are inimical to the growth of our Municipality.
“The Assembly is committed to partnering with the Commission to enhance its educational campaign in most of the schools, especially the University of Ghana, Legon Campus, mainly to sensitize the youth to abstain from indulging in all forms of acts connected to drug abuse. The Assembly, as part of efforts to encourage the youth to abstain, recently held a drug abuse awareness campaign and will urge NACOC to consider partnering with us to continue with the exercise,” he stressed.
The Ayawaso West MCE further assured that his office will be considering sponsoring at least one person living with Substance Use Disorder to undergo treatment and counselling. This, he added, will help reintegrate them into their respective families.
The Director-General of NACOC, Brig Gen Maxwell Obuba Mantey, commended the MCE for his focus on tackling the drug abuse menace in the Municipality and assured the Commission’s support and partnership in dealing with both the illicit drug trafficking and abuse menace in the Ayawaso West Municipal.
“NACOC is committed to supporting such a wonderful initiative being initiated and implemented by the Assembly in addressing the drug abuse situation”
Brig Gen Mantey assured that the Commission will ensure to partner with all relevant key stakeholders to tackle the drug abuse menace across the country.
