The Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission, Brig Gen Maxwell O. Mantey, has called for the establishment of special courts to handle narcotic cases in the country. He said there are many cases the courts are handling now, noting that many involve tainted assets of the accused person that end up deteriorating due to delays in proceedings.
According to him, timely convictions for drug traffickers could significantly impact their operations, allowing for the legal confiscation of their properties by the state.
Brig Gen Mantey made the call when he paid a courtesy call on the Attorney General (AG), Dr. Dominic Ayine, to introduce himself and thank him for the support the Commission has been receiving from the Attorney General’s Department.
The DG said he is grateful for the kind of cooperation and the collaboration that exist between the two institutions. He emphasised that NACOC will continue to rely on the AG’s expertise in prosecuting narcotic cases.
Other issues discussed included proposals to amend some provisions in the Narcotics Control Commission Act 1019, Act 2020.
On his part Dr. Ayine, commended the DG for the good work he and his team are doing. He assured that the request for special court will be considered, while reiterating the AG’s commitment to support NACOC in executing their mandate under the Act 1019.
